Sitting in Carlton Hide on a pre-dawn observation at 5.30am in -6C for two hours is not recommended for the faint hearted!!

Carlton Hide - Barn Owl (2), Short-Eared Owl (1), Green Sandpiper (1 heard), Woodcock (2)

East Marsh Pool - 3 Shelduck, Godeneye (1M+1F)

Also seen were Marsh Tit (1) near the volunteers car park and 2 more Woodcock while working with today’s work party!

Dawn at Wright hide. surprising little this morning. no sign of any cormorants as compared to last Sundays visit where there were 50. Geese also low in numbers with only 120 Grey lag and 20 Canada. 2 mutes were new since Sunday, as was the Shelduck. The GC Grebes were not seen either. With thousands of gull flying over only a few dropped in at East Marsh, circa about 1000 BBG with over 100 C Gulls. Max of 7 LBBg that came down with 2 Herring Gull

Foggy start but clearing mid morning!

A very secretive Bittern in the reeds in front of Big Hide, Barnacle Goose (1), Shelduck (1), Wigeon (4), Goldeneye (1M+1F), Snipe (6), Cettis Warbler (4 heard), Sparrowhawk (1), Lesser Redpoll (8), Siskin (3), Fieldfare (15), Redwing (23), Fox on Wigeon Bank

Late evening. woodcock edge of horsetail glade. 20 redpoll also there.
East marsh-200 mixed flock geese. 3 goldeneye, 32 tufted, 15 pochard, 32 gadwall

Early morning visit, 300 + geese, greylags moved out first followed by the Canada's half hour later. 50 cormorants on island in front of Wright hide, most gone within half hour after dawn. 4 great crested grebe, 10 pochard, new Zealand scaup, 5 wigeon. 1500 BHG, 50 common, 2 LBBG and herring gull

Short-Eared Owl (1 seen over Newlands @ 8am), Blackcap (1 male at Saga sign with group of Tits), Small flock of Siskin/Lesser Redpoll but no sign of receny Mealy). Wigeon (4), Goldeneye (2 1M+1F)Good numbers of Gadwall 40+
