Biggest surprise of the day was a Red Admiral fluttered past us chased by Dunnocks just after we had missed a Bittern by seconds (many thanks for the heads up Conservation Team) while a wander around the west and east marsh produced 5 Great-spotted Woodpecker, 2 Marsh Tit, 2 Goldcrest, Green Sandpiper and at least 8 Jays. The feeding station by the visitors centre produced 2 Coal Tit and 2 Nuthatch.

Birds of note-all East Marsh 13.00-17.00: Water Rail, 45 Common Gull,7 Herring Gull,6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 350+ Black-headed Gulls, 5 Snipe, 2 Kestral, 2 goosander (♂&♀-did not land)also along with the six Wigeon on east Marsh another 48 tried to land before heading off towards Coombe.

Bittern seen on West Marsh Pool at 10.30 am. Many thanks to Jeff for spotting it almost hidden in the reedbed! Also House Sparrow (scarce for the reserve) seen in the main car park at 8am.

Unusual event PM Wed. Three of us in East Marsh hide observed Buzzard taking Coot off the ice,flying to the bank and then protecting it's prey under it's wing from attacking Crows before flying off into undergrowth.

Goosander (2? + 2? - 6 were observed before my arrival by Ken Sherlock), Jack Snipe (1 feeding near the waters edge on Wigeon Bank), Woodcock (1 on Farm Pool Reed Bed), Barn Owl (1 emerged from Newlands box @ 16:45), Willow Tit (1), Treecreeper (1),Redwing (40+), Linnet (2), Fieldfare (11), Water Rail (2 @ Carlton), Bank Vole (2), Muntjac Deer (1)
