Difficult to see much from East Marsh 07/08/09 19:00 - 21:00 Difficult to see much at East Marsh Hide as the vegetation on the islands is quite high - The flock of Lapwing remain. At Carlton Hide, 3 Kingfishers showing off for hours and a Green Sandpiper.

Admin Comment: There is a working party on 27th August. They will be clearing the vegetation from the islands on East Marsh Pool.

Excellent days birding with 59 Species, even in the rain!
Highlights
Snipe (2), Green Sandpiper (2), Oystercatcher (3), Redshank (2), Water Rail, Little Grebe, Common Tern (2), Shoveler, Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk, Cettis Warbler, Blackcap, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler, Bullfinch, Willow Tit, Gadwall with 3 young still on River/Teal Pool.

Black-tailed Godwit (EMP), Green Sanpiper (1 Carlton Pool), Good numbers of lapwing, Kingfisher (flyby @ carlton), Buzzard, Sedge Warbler, Oystercatcher (2)

Good numbers of butterflies throughout the reserve, to name a few Brimstone (1), Painted Lady (20+), Peacock, Gatekeeper, Comma

Also Black-tailed skimmer, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker and Brown Hawker dragonflies.

Black Tailed Godwit, East Marsh Pool. (Well hidden in vegetation on Willow Island but comes up when spooked with Lapwing flock circa 600!!)

An item of news from yesterday (28th).
A Little Egret dropped in on East Marsh Pool for a few minutes, it then flew over to Carlton Pool where it was driven off by a Coot.

Morning Highlights
Hobby, Little Egret (Carlton Hide), Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk, Water Rail (2) plus 2 chicks, Teal with 3 chicks!

Sat, 11th July

Hobby - Teal Pool, and later Carlton dead tree.
Cuckoo heard briefly very early in morning.
Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Redshank and juvenile Lapwing on Teal Pool.
Group of five or six blackbirds flushed from ground near edge of Sheep Field. Interesting, as didn't seem to include juveniles, so not a family party.

Many hundreds of cinnabar moth caterpillars on Ragwort, especially at edge of Sheep Field.
