|Tuesday 27th December 2016.
It was cold, so I wasn't recording properly!
However: lots of wrens, robins, blackbirds, rabbits, squirrels, tits - blue, long-tailed and great. Two or three fieldfares and redwings along the Brandon Lane edge of the reedbeds. Heard at least three separate song thrushes bashing snails on "anvils". Good view of a water-rail quietly pecking in the shallows just north of Wright Hide, only a few feet from me. Dead swan in the Carlton Hide pool. Chiffchaff in brambles between here and the new hide. Harrier circling over Newlands Reedbeds. Probably Marsh Harrier ... but ... it was very grey. All over. Rather narrow wings, quite a big bird. He just did the one circuit, then flew off towards Brandon village, and there seemed to be a similar-shaped bird in the distance. I know Hen Harrier is unlikely, and I'm not claiming it - but if someone else does, use this to back them up.
Best definite sighting: roe deer, in the reedbed just the other side of the raised track from the Old Tip to the Farm. Deer "slots" also found alongside the Drive - going in both directions - and on the raised track between Top Pools and the lower reedbed. These are also roe deer. Looked it up in "Animal Tracks and Signs", Bang and Dahlstrom, OUP 2001 edition. Also my source for a couple of pellets found in the open grass just beyond the tree-fringe of Brandon Lane. These were rather degraded, but pale grey and seemed to be mostly fur and a bit of bone. These would seem to be from a short-eared owl, unless B&D are wrong, or other animals pick up owl-pellets and move them.
