31/12/2012 14:00 to 15:00 main path to hides boggy but passable with wellies. Cormorant, shoveler and wigeon abundant from east marsh pool hide. And highlight of the day was a ♂ SMEW from the Jon Baldwin hide.

1 ♂ bullfinch, 2 goldcrests, 50+ lesser redpoll among which several siskins. 1 jay, nuthatch, 10+ long tailed tits, 7 reed buntings. Path to Carlton Hide severely flooded today.

Just a visit to tea room, but marsh tit briefly on the feeders and small mixed flock of redpoll, goldfinch and a linnet feeding just outside visitor centre entrance.

Birds of note-West Marsh-Little Grebe. East Marsh-2 Goldeneye (♂@♀),4 Pochard, 16 Snipe,New Zealand Scaup (escapee),Eygptain Goose, Barnacle Goose (feral),Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk, Kestral, Redwing,Fieldfare,Jay, Bullfinch.51 species seen today in three hours. Note all hide were accessible today

Siskin/Redpoll flock moving about the reserve (50+ birds), Common Snipe (12), Buzzard (1), Kingfisher (2), Water Rail (1 - West Marsh), Lapwing (250+ over west marsh), Teal, Gadwall, Shoveler, Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, GS Woodpecker (several around the reserve), Redwing (15+)
